the little voice

After much deliberation, I've decided. Mondays hate me.

Last Monday, when I was on Muni heading for work, I took off my clip-on sunglasses and put them in the loose front pocket of my bag. The little voice in my head said, "You should put those someplace more secure." I thought back at it: "Shut up, you worry wart."

When I stepped off the train and on to the Embarcadero, my sunglasses disappeared into the distance, riding the N-Judah alone. I haven't seen them since.

Today, another Monday, I decided Muni was too dangerous to my belongings, so I drove to work. Halfway up Mission Street the little voice said, "You know, if the car broke down now, you totally wouldn't have the money to fix it." I told the voice: "You worry too much."

When I got to the gate at work, I realized I'd left the key at home. So I ran around the building and came in through the front door, grabbed the gate clicker, and jogged back to the car. I thought forgetting my work keys would be the worst thing to happen to me today.

I opened the gate, got in my car, and turned the key. Won't start.

Won't start. Won't start. Won't start.

Steve, the nice guy from a business next door, came out to see what the dying sound was. He helped me push the car into the lot the old fashioned way. It brought back all sorts of old memories of my '68 VW Bug, Rosie, and all the times random passers by helped me out with a push.

Someday I'm going to start listening to that little voice. Also, I'm going to stay in bed every Monday.

I settle in to work and make some phone calls. My trusty mechanic shrugs (I can really hear him shrug over the phone) and says, "See if it keeps happening." The Muni lost and found guy says he hasn't seen anything like my clip-ons, and then hangs up and goes back to sleep. And the guy at the glasses shop is unsure if the new clips will be ready before I leave town.

"Where you going?" he says.

"Burning Man," I say.

"Well, if they're not ready before you leave, I'll bring them to you on the playa. I'm heading up on Wednesday."

I love this town, Mondays be damned.
