All of these stories take place in San Francisco, though they may not always be about the city. That's the way San Francisco is. Sometimes it fades into an interesting backdrop, sometimes it kicks you in the face with its immediacy. I called this site San Francisco Stories because I noticed some time ago that most of the stories I was telling my friends had something to do with this city. I think it's because this is the first time in my life that I've truly felt at home in a place. I grew up in Claremont, a small town in Southern California, and never really knew my neighbors at all. Then I went to college in Santa Cruz. That was wonderful, and there are certainly a lot of stories there. But, as a student, my existence had more to do with the student community than the place. As my friends and I graduated, we left, taking our stories with us. But San Francisco. This place is different. I live and work in a 100-year old Victorian in a neighborhood called Cole Valley, near the Golden Gate park and Haight Street. This neighborhood is a community, full of working stiffs, yuppies, new parents, and freelancers like me. So these are my stories. They're the moments of a traveler with a love of stories, web geek in the real world, a man growing up. Welcome to my home.
I'd like to thank Christian Mogensen for writing the wonderful cgi scripts that work behind the scenes here at sfstories, making it easier for me to concentrate on going out and finding new stories to tell. Thanks, Christian! I'd also like to thank Maggy Donea and kia.net for all the support (both technical and emotional) and for hosting this site. Finally, I'd like to thank my friends and neighbors in San Francisco for giving me something to write about, and reminding me what the word community actually means.
What I'm trying to do is write down my stories to document this very special time in my life. But this is not a journal. So I'll only tell a story when it comes to me in the middle of the night and grabs me by the shoulders and forces me to. That means new stories will be posted here randomly perhaps infrequently. Please respect that. In other words, tread lightly.
